Teaching practical skills with academic knowledge is becoming increasingly vital. Biology laboratories help students understand challenging biological concepts while also developing scientific inquiry, data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in the health and medical sciences. This project attempts to create a competency-based, universal biology laboratory curriculum that fulfils international educational standards and may be implemented in European undergraduate health courses to assure uniformity and quality.

The researchers investigated medicine, pharmacy, nursing, biology, and biomedical sciences courses at 138 institutions in 28 European countries. Of the 432 syllabi discovered, 290 were recovered, and half included lab components. Microscopy, DNA isolation and PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, cell division, cell structure and function, laboratory safety, and basic laboratory equipment were the most popular laboratory topics.

Based on these findings, the article recommends a two-semester approach that combines biology lab skills with advanced molecular processes. Following European educational standards, the framework updates training and increases accessibility through the use of virtual labs and artificial intelligence. The curriculum prepares students for health-related occupations by improving their fundamental biology knowledge and connecting it to advanced physiological understanding.

The study finds that health and medical students require a solid biological basis, and that lab learning enhances competence and confidence. In a globalised health education system, a standardised biology curriculum can help provide equitable, high-quality instruction for students from many institutions and nations. This minimises disparities in laboratory training and better prepares future health professionals to handle global health concerns.
