Honouring Dr N.J.C. Olivier

A Legacy of Excellence in Forensic Science Education

Honouring a Pioneer in Forensic Science Education in South Africa

As the National Certificate: Forensic Science (SAQA ID 57651) approaches the end of its remarkable 20-year journey in its current Legacy Qualification form, Forensic Academy Africa pauses to honour the life, work and lasting influence of Dr N.J.C. Olivier.

Dr Nick Olivier was a pioneer in the development of forensic science education in South Africa. As Chairperson of the Standards Generating Body (SGB) Forensic Science, he played a leading role in the creation of the National Certificate: Forensic Science, registered by SAQA on 16 November 2006 as the first qualification of its kind in the country. His vision, leadership and commitment helped shape a qualification that opened the door for structured learning and professional growth in the forensic science field.

Dr Olivier was also an accredited Assessor and Moderator for the qualification and made an exceptional contribution to the quality and integrity of forensic science training. His academic foundation was as strong as his practical experience. He held both a Master’s degree and a PhD from the University of South Africa (UNISA), with research focused on crime investigation and proactive policing. His scholarship reflected the same qualities for which he was widely respected: discipline, insight, professionalism and a deep commitment to justice.

His career in service of the people of South Africa spanned more than 30 years in the South African Police Service, where he served first as a Detective and later in the Education component. He then continued his contributions to the field at Technicon SA (now UNISA), where he served for 10 years as Chief Lecturer in Investigation of Crime. Even after retirement, Dr Olivier remained actively involved in the development of others, co-supervising D-Tech and M-Tech: Forensic Investigation students at UNISA until his passing on 10 April 2021.

Forensic Academy Africa has been accredited for this qualification since 2009 under SASSETA Accreditation Number 081985269877. Over the years, more than 400 students have studied the National Certificate: Forensic Science through our Skills Development Provider accreditation. Dr Olivier played an essential role in this journey. His contribution lives on in every learner empowered, every graduate developed, and every professional who entered the forensic science field with stronger knowledge, sharper skills and greater purpose.

From April to June 2026, Forensic Academy Africa commemorates the fifth anniversary of Dr Olivier's passing by paying tribute not only in words, but in action.

In recognition of his immense contribution to forensic science education in South Africa, Forensic Academy Africa is offering a special tribute promotion for Intakes 16-18 of 2026. All applications received during this period will have the R2,000 Application Fee and R3,000 Activation Fee waived.

This tribute carries special significance, as Intake 18, with a cut-off date of 15 June 2026, will be the final intake of the National Certificate: Forensic Science (SAQA ID 57651) in its current form as a Legacy Qualification before alignment to the Occupational Framework.

This is more than a special offer. It is a final opportunity to be part of a qualification that has helped shape forensic science training in South Africa, while honouring a man whose dedication made it possible.

Dr N.J.C. Olivier’s legacy endures in the qualification he helped build, in the students he helped shape, and in the future of forensic science education in South Africa.

Celebrate a legacy. Don't miss the final intake.
